06.04.2026 - dgVoodoo2 and Reshade combined
Adventure game Jack Keane
This animated gif shows the adventure game "Jack Keane" (2007, by
Deck13 Interactive).
The first two pictures are in 1440×900 resolution, i. e. the highest
resolution that can be set in the options menu. The first is the
original setting, the second includes dgVoodoo2 (right bottom shows
dgVoodoo2 watermark) and ReShade (right top shows frames per
second). The following two pictures are in 4k resolution, set by
editing the settings.ini file, again the original setting and and
the version including dgVoodoo2 and ReShade. The inventory (left top
shows knife symbol) is now very small, and the interface (bottom
text shows text "Go to") is cut. Obviously, when actually playing
the game, i. e. when the game is in motion, the differences between
these settings (namely the jaggies) become far more obvious.
dgVoodoo2 and ReShade are common tools to change the look of games.
dgVoodoo2 serves as a tool to enable or enhance older games on newer
systems. The name "Voodoo" refers to the old Voodoo graphics cards
with the "Glide" graphics API (application programming interface)
developped by the company 3Dfx that was later bought by Nvidia, but
dgVoodoo2 also supports the DirectX API by Microsoft. The name
"ReShade" refers to its purpose to inject shaders, i. e. to add
visual effects to games. dgVoodoo2 and ReShade can be
combined. Reshade requires a DirectX version of at least 9
(like Jack Keane); for older games other dll files are
necessary. dgVoodoo2 brings older DirectX games to newer
versions up to the current 12. To combine dgVoodoo2 and
Reshade, the corresponding dgVoodoo2 DirectX dll files (32-bit or
64-bit) must be copied into the directory with the game exe file.
Then the ReShade_Setup.exe must be started and the directory with
the game exe file must be selected. When using dgVoodoo2 dll files,
DirectX 10/11/12 must be selected.
I recommend first starting the game just with the copied dgVoodoo2
files to check whether the game works at all. If it does, then I
recommend creating a dgVoodoo.conf file by starting the Control
panel (dgVoodooCpl.exe), selecting the directory with the game exe
file and changing some parameters. Now there is a dgVoodoo.conf
in the game directory which can be edited with any editor like
notepad. dgVoodoo2 in itself does not work with all games, and even
in a game where it does work, still some dgVoodoo2 parameters can
cause issues. Even if current versions of dgVoodoo2 or ReShade cause
issues, earlier versions might work flawlessly. Possible values in
the dgVoodoo.conf are:
[General]
OutputAPI = bestavailable
ScalingMode = centered_ar
[GeneralExt]
Resampling = lanczos-3
[DirectX]
Filtering = 4
Mipmapping = autogen_bilinear
Antialiasing = 4x
There are lots of ReShade presets, made for specific games but often
generally usable, that can be found e. g. in the modding community.
Possible shaders are:
Techniques=Curves@Curves.fx
MartysMods_Toddyhancer@MartysMods_TODDYHANCER.fx
Technicolor2@Technicolor2.fx
LumaSharpen@LumaSharpen.fx
MartysMods_AntiAliasing@MartysMods_SMAA.fx
Not every game works best or works at all with these settings. And
above all, this is a matter of taste. However, one can make copies
of the preferred settings for both Dgvoodoo (dgVoodoo.conf file) and
Reshade (ReShade.ini file, ReShadePreset.ini file, reshade-shaders
folder). Then, for other games, one can copy those files and the
folder into the directory with the game exe file. Only the
ReShade_Setup.exe must be started for activation (see above). If
necessary, minor adjustments can be made easily.

Games nearly always tell some kind of story - that is already true
for First person shooters like Doom and Quake and especially true
for adventure games. However apparently most people do not notice or
do not care about the propaganda. They even reject morality and thus
enjoy the immoral propaganda. They become a part of the plan to
destroy morality.
